Growing for Gold is a key initiative that forms part of the South Australian Government's $75 million investment to increase children's physical activity and reduce screen time through the Kids Off Screens initiative.
The Kids Off Screens initiative aims to encourage children and young people to spend less time on devices and more time participating in sport, recreation, and social activities that support their health, wellbeing and development.
As part of this commitment, the Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing (ORSR) has assumed responsibility for the future coordination and expansion of the Growing for Gold program, supporting its evolution into a statewide participation initiative.
Originally established by the City of Salisbury in 1999, Growing for Gold has successfully connected thousands of children and young people with local sport and recreation opportunities through free come-and-try activities delivered during the school holidays.
The program provides children aged 3 to 16 years with the opportunity to explore a variety of sports and recreation activities, develop new skills, build confidence, and connect with local clubs and organisations.
Building on its success in metropolitan Adelaide, Growing for Gold is expanding into regional South Australia, with pilot programs being delivered across metropolitan and regional communities in 2026 to inform a future statewide rollout.
